The Met Gala 2026 is here. And honestly? It already has all the ingredients of an iconic year. Here's everything you need to know, from the date and theme to who's showing up and how to watch it all go down.

When Is the Met Gala 2026?

If you've been wondering when is the Met Gala 2026, here's your answer: Monday, May 4, 2026. The Met Gala always takes place on the first Monday in May, so that's your easy rule to remember every year. When is the Met Gala? First Monday of May, always.

The red carpet officially kicks off at 6:00 p.m. ET, with celebrity arrivals beginning around 5:30 p.m. and typically continuing for about two hours. After the carpet wraps, guests head inside for dinner and a private exhibition preview, none of which is filmed or shared publicly.

The Theme: Costume Art

This year's exhibition theme is "Costume Art," and the dress code for guests is "Fashion Is Art." The concept explores how clothing functions as a form of artistic expression across history, presenting the dressed body as a canvas. The Costume Institute exhibition opens on May 10, 2026, and runs through January 10, 2027. It will feature roughly 400 objects, including around 200 garments and 200 artworks displayed side by side.

What does this mean for the red carpet? Think sculptural gowns that look like they belong in a museum, molded silhouettes, archival couture, and garments that blur the line between clothing and sculpture. It is a broad theme, which honestly makes it more exciting to watch because nobody really knows what direction guests will go. Celebrity stylist Law Roach put it perfectly when he told E! News: "Fashion as Art is a very broad theme. Maybe we'll see someone dressed as the Mona Lisa."

Who's Co-Chairing the 2026 Met Gala?

The co-chairs this year are Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour.

Beyoncé's return is the headline. This marks her first Met Gala appearance in about a decade, and the fashion world is already buzzing. Nicole Kidman recently became a Chanel House Ambassador, so a custom Chanel look feels like a safe bet. Venus Williams brings her signature energy, and Anna Wintour, as always, keeps the whole event running.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos are serving as Honorary Chairs and lead sponsors. Saint Laurent is also a major sponsor this year.

Who's on the Guest List?

The official guest list stays under wraps until the red carpet begins. Around 450 guests receive an invitation, and entry is by invite only, typically extended through a brand partnership. The Host Committee this year includes Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Teyana Taylor, and Zoë Kravitz, among others. Confirmed musicians expected to attend include BLACKPINK's Lisa and Sam Smith. Fans are also buzzing about possible appearances from Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, and Addison Rae, though none of those are officially confirmed yet.

On the flip side, Zendaya is reportedly sitting this one out due to her packed schedule, which includes promoting her A24 film "The Drama," a new season of Euphoria, and upcoming Spider-Man and Dune sequels. Deepika Padukone is also skipping the event due to her pregnancy. And in a fun debut, Karan Johar is making his first Met Gala appearance in a look by Manish Malhotra.

How to Watch the Met Gala 2026

You do not need a $100,000 ticket to enjoy the show. Vogue's official livestream is completely free and starts at 6:00 p.m. ET on Vogue's YouTube channel, TikTok, Instagram, and their website. Emma Chamberlain is back as Vogue's red carpet correspondent, with Ashley Graham, Cara Delevingne, and La La Anthony hosting the stream.

If you prefer E!, their coverage also starts at 6:00 p.m. ET and is available on Peacock, DirecTV, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling Blue. DirecTV currently offers a 5-day free trial for new users, so you can technically catch the whole red carpet without spending a rupee.

Why the Met Gala Is Such a Big Deal

The Met Gala is not just a celebrity party. It is the annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, and every dollar raised goes toward funding the exhibition and the institute's work throughout the year. In 2023, the gala generated nearly double the media impact value of the Super Bowl, clocking in at close to $1 billion in publicity value for brands.

The "Costume Art" theme asks a genuinely interesting question: what really separates fashion from art? The exhibition's answer seems to be, not much. And if the red carpet looks deliver on that premise, May 4, 2026 is going to be a very good Monday.
